OSLO, Norway - Ireland’s pioneering ban on smoking in pubs and restaurants seems to be helping some addicts to kick the habit and may be promoting a new way to meet people, Ireland’s health minister said on Tuesday. Micheal Martin, visiting Norway which in June becomes the second nation in the world after Ireland to outlaw smoking in bars and restaurants, said the Irish ban was working well since its launch at the end of March. The nationwide laws, inspired by bans in places such as California and New York City, are meant to protect waiters and other workers from second-hand smoke. But they are having other side-effects, Martin said.

The major social phenomenon that has arisen from this, I’m told, is a new type of dating,” he added. Men have been striking up conversations with women while they smoke legally outside bars and clubs.

“Outdoors is apparently the place to touch base, to make contact,” he said, quoting newspaper reports. He joked that the worry now was that people would start smoking to help dating.

I've banned all Irish non-smokers from my property.

People used to go to pubs and restaurants to meet new people.
Now they go to pubs and restaurants to be pushed outside to meet new people.

(I wonder if theses "reporters" would similarly preen about the wonderful new way that people are meeting each other while standing in line waiting to register their firearms.)

My daughter,a non smoker, calls it "smoker bonding".

She worked in a large, one company building, where smoking was prohibited and said that the smokers knew more people in various departments than anyone else because of their outside smoking gatherings.

Smoking areas could be a place to make business connections too.LOL

You're daughter is correct.

Smoking areas at companies that ban it, or in places that have laws have become networking meccas all over.

I know of lots of non-smokers that join the smokers on their breaks for just that reason.

Smoking areas put decision makers on the same level as the mailroom clerks.
